Mudslide!

Hey guys! Monday after I wrote you we went to Ambo and played soccer at this indoor facility with Hermana Dali, one of our less actives. Transfers got pushed back a day because there was a mudslide in between Lima and Huancayo. The road was blocked and the "new" missionaries couldn't get in and the "old" Missionaries couldn't get out. We had a number of lessons this week. We are working Elder Hardison's schedule as well as our own until he gets a companion.

Thursday we had transfers. I am staying here to finish Elder Tapia's training. Some people from our zone have left and became zone leaders. Elder Pincock, who was a district leader here, is going to be a zone leader with Elder Fitzgerald in Huancayo. Elder Delgado is becoming a district leader in Huancayo. Elder Inkley came to be a zone leader here in Huánuco (in La Colonial). Elder Hardison's new companion is Elder Fawson, the previous assistant. It's kind of funny that Elder John and Elder Fawson just switched spots. Elder Fawson is from Panguitch.

We had John's baptism on Saturday and it was awesome! I had the opportunity to baptize him and it was a really spiritual service. He was really, really happy. You should have seen the smile on his face. It was crazy big! He was super, super happy! It's amazing what this gospel can do to bless the lives of people. Another cool thing was that we had some investigators come to the baptism. I wasn't expecting them to come but it just goes to show that people can do things that you don't think they can.

It was a little bit crazy getting the baptism ready. All during the day we did not have lights. We were scrambling around and hoping the lights would come on, we said a prayer and sure enough the lights came on. Then there was no water. We had to find somebody to turn on the water. We had to use hoses and buckets and whatever we could use to fill the font. We said another little prayer and once again God provided. It worked out perfectly, better than I thought it would. Christian got the priesthood about three weeks ago. He, Mariana and Gabriella are doing great. We are going to watch general conference this next week at the stake center, so that’ll be sweet.

As a little side note, there was this big truck (like a water truck) that was coming down this hill and the brakes went out. He ended up going down this flight of stairs and crashed into this mud house and broke it. It was crazy to see this big truck tipped up on its side. The driver went to the hospital and I think he ended up dying. It's pretty crazy and sad to see that. Well, until next time. Adios!

Street Burgers!

Monday after I wrote you guys I went and got my haircut, went to Metros and bought some floss and stuff, and then we went and played soccer on the turf fields. It was our zone against another zone and it was really fun.

On Tuesday night, Elder John got a phone call and he is now the new assistant to President Henderson. So Wednesday morning he left and his companion, Elder Hardison, is now with us temporarily.

We had more meetings with John, Johnny's brother, and things are going well that way. Just getting him ready for his baptism. We found some more less actives to teach so that is great. We had one of our meetings fall through, so the first counselor in the bishopric took us out for these burgers. They were AMAZING! Oh my word! They were from this little cart thing on the street but they were incredible!

On Friday there was a big stake activity about missionary work. There were about 200 people there. It was freaking nuts! I figured there would only be about 80. They asked me to do a little presentation/training there and it all went well. We came back and killed some fruit flies in our house and then went out and had some lessons.

It's really good to go to church after a week’s worth of work and have good attendance. There were 113 people there which is awesome. We had two new investigators, Elga and John, (mom and son) that came and John (Johnny's brother) came also. He is progressing well toward his baptism.

I just want to say “sorry” for how selfish I was back home. I thought about myself before anyone else every freaking time. That is something that I have completely changed since I've been out here. It was great to get your letter. Rachel, it is awesome that you finished the Book of Mormon in two days! Wow! I love you guys so much! Have a great week! Ciao!

God is Great!

After I wrote you guys on Pday, we went out to eat as a zone to this Chinese restaurant named Khon Wa. I had a steak. We then went as a zone to the temple of Kotosh. I didn't see a temple, buildings, or ruins. It basically was as if we rented a grass field. Good thing we only paid one Sol. We were probably in the wrong spot.

I got my package from you guys on Tuesday and oh my word did you guys spoil me. It's seriously ridiculous, it's all laying out my bed right now, I can't even tell you guys how amazing it is! I got to organize it all, it all traveled pretty well, only one of the little toothpastes exploded but that was it. I really like this new white baptismal tie that you sent me. It's pretty sweet. It's kind of like a sparkly, snowy camouflage tie. I'm going to wear it at the baptism.

Wednesday we had to drop one of our investigators. She just wasn't progressing. I basically just told her when you're ready we are here to teach you. Thursday and Friday we prepared for the baptism. Johnny had his baptismal interview with Elder White and it went great. We also had some lessons that went well.

Saturday we filled the baptismal font and had Johnny's baptism. I was able to baptize him and it was amazing! It was probably my favorite baptism that I've had so far. I didn't have to worry about anything, it was nice and organized, people showed up on time, it was just awesome! I really felt the spirit!! I am so happy! I am on cloud nine! His whole family was there and now they want to join the church. Johnny has a twin brother named John and now John has a baptismal date set for the 28th of March! He has already attended all of the meetings that are required; we just need to finish teaching him. We had investigators show up late, but that's okay because I freaking love them! There were so many people there I am just so, so very happy right now! I just need to remember that when the bad times come, the good times like this are always on their way. Seriously, please remember that things always do get better; if you are doing the right things you will be rewarded! That's one of the things we teach. It's one of the simplest promises and principles of God. Your obedience will always bring blessings! I love you guys so much! Have a great week.

The BoM is the bomb!

Last Pday (after I wrote you guys) we went to Yanag again and played soccer on their turf fields. Later that night we had a family night with the family Matias, not the family we live with but his brother. Tuesday was a tough day. We stayed in the room all day because my companion was sick. Wednesday wasn't much better, pretty much everyone canceled.

We have a new investigator now, his name is Johnny. He has been coming to church for a while but has never really been taught by the missionaries. He is 14 and has all the required attendance to be baptized. So we are teaching him the lessons and he has a baptismal date for March 14. We have an investigator named Anthony and he is awesome. He has a lot of sincere questions. He's a really smart kid and is really studying the Scriptures. He is really searching for answers and we had a really cool lesson with him where he was asking these really deep doctrinal questions and the spirit was really strong and I definitely felt prompted of what to talk about and what to say in response to his questions.

On Thursday I did divisions with Elder White and we taught to 6 lessons. We met with Ivan and Henry (who have been having a few issues with alcohol) and Ivan was sick. We asked him if he wanted a blessing for health and so I gave him a blessing. It wasn't until later that I found out that he was upset to his stomach because he had been drinking! Crazy!

Friday we switched back to our normal companionships. Elder Tapia is doing well. I'm learning a lot on the mission: patience, humility....a lot of things, it seems like something different every day. Everything's going to be so freaking easy when I get home. I was kind of cranky on Friday because it wasn't the best day. It started off well with our zone meeting but then we had all of our meetings fall through, our investigators weren't doing their parts, it just sucked. It's amazing how I can go from super, super happy to just ticked off. It's alright though, there's much learning and growth from it. One good thing that happened is that I finished the Book of Mormon today! I wish I would have read it more back home. I love reading it! I hope you are all reading it. I love you guys! Have a great week.

6 Month Mark!

Hey guys, so Monday, after I wrote you guys, we went back to our place and changed and then went to Tottus. We messed around there for a while and then we went and played a little soccer, had some lunch and went and helped a family move. Later we made no bake cookies with Elder Bush and his companion, Elder White, Elder John, and Elder Hardison. They were really good actually. On Tuesday we had our normal district meeting in the morning. Later we had some lessons with our investigators which went well. They're all progressing and we set a baptismal date with a few of them for March 21st.

Wednesday was a pretty good day actually, we had a member come with us to every meeting, which is always nice, it's a really big help. We set baptismal dates with 3 more investigators for March 21st. We're going to work hard to make that happen. It's definitely not going to be easy with some of the problems that they're having, but we're going to make it happen.

On Thursday I completed six months in the mission, which is crazy! I can't believe I am a quarter of the way done. Friday not much happened we will just leave it at that.

Thanks for my T-shirt Aunt Heather

Saturday we went to Ambo for a little activity for the youth that are getting ready to go on a mission. It was cool! We, as a companionship, got to take the youth and go and teach people. It was a really good day and we had a lot of success. I was able to give a blessing of health while I was out and I felt really good while doing it. The blessing was for a little girl who was sick. It was such a great experience. We found two new investigators and I hope they come to church. We have about eight people that we're supposed to pick up for church and I'm not sure how that's going to work out but we are working hard and things are going well.

I'm fasting right now and I have a headache because we've been traveling and there's so much noise outside of our home right now. I'm kind of miserable but that's okay because sacrifice brings blessings. But seriously, there is this huge party going on right outside of my door!! It is ridiculous! It is so loud! They have these freaking speakers that are about 10 feet high, no joke! They can't be allowed to do that, it has got to be against the law. Everything smells like beer outside. I just opened the window and it reeks!! There are these two big trees that they cut down and they put little decorations on it and they have a weird blanket of a cat...I just don't even know, it's ridiculous! I can't believe they're doing this. I hopefully am going to be able to sleep. But that's alright! I love it! I freaking love it! The mission, it's awesome!! I love you guys! Keep praying for me and our investigators. Pray that I have patience with these people tonight!

The Best Birthday Present!

After I wrote you guys last Monday, we went to Ambo and played soccer on this huge, full-sized soccer field. It was fun. Tuesday we had a multi zone conference with Pres. Henderson. We learned some cool things, like remember to just teach and keep it simple. We had a lesson with Luis and his girlfriend, Diana (the referrals we got from Hermano Lincolnthe 1st counselor in the bishopric) we also had a lesson with two contacts that we found, Ivan and Henry. Ivan (20) and Henry (24) are brothers. They both struggle with drinking. When we contacted them (a few days ago), Henry said that he just wanted to "change who he was completely". When we met with them for their lesson, I was straight with them. I told them, "Listen, it's going to take a lot of work but it's totally possible to change. Are you guys willing to do whatever it takes to change?" They said, "Yes". I really think they are going to progress. It's amazing how quickly fasting/prayers are answered. We prayed that we would get referrals and we got some. I prayed that we would get some investigators and we got nine! It's just crazy! So, remember that there is nothing that you can't ask our Father. He cares!

We've been meeting with Christian Villanueva, getting him ready for his baptism on Saturday. We taught him about laws and ordinances, had our pre-interview with him, and he's doing great. We've been working really hard for a while now, trying our best to be diligent, and it's finally starting to pay off now. Just remember that it always does. It might suck for a little bit, maybe a little longer than a little bit, but always, always, always, God comes through in the clutch! Remember that He is there for you and He will always help you no matter what. Yeah, it's a simple little thing but, "by simple and small things, great things come to pass."

On Friday morning, during the course of our studies, I may have gotten a little bored and threw an apple out the window to try and break it against the wall across the street and I might have hit the window and shattered it! It was kind of embarrassing but 56 Peruvian Soles later and it's all repaired. Hermano Matias wasn't mad, and it was very nice of him not to be. I can't believe I'm turning 19 on this week! It just doesn't feel like it's my birthday. I'm going to bed on Friday night 18 and I'm waking up 19!

"Hello", this is the 19-year-old Will speakingI didn't know if you could tell the difference. Haha. Today was an awesome day. I started the day off opening up your packages. All kinds of food, toys, ties, pants...seriously, thank you guys! It was awesome! You guys spoil me rotten. For lunch, Elders John and Hardison came over. We had the closest thing to barbecue they have here in Peru. It was really good. It was very nice of Hermano Matias to invite them over. We ended the day with a baptism! Christian is doing really, really well. He was SO happy! After the baptism, we were in the bathroom and I just gave him a big hug! I asked him how he felt and he said, "clean. Like a new person." I got to baptize him which was an awesome thing on my birthday! On Sunday, when Christian received the Holy Ghost, I was able to help with that which was really cool! Later in the evening, we had a meeting with the stake president and that went well. We talked about baptisms and a bunch of other little things and then after that we had another lesson with Luis and Diana. They've had a lot of doubts about the church and they don't know what to believe, so we just sat there and answered all of their questions. It was really good. We invited Diana to say the closing prayer, which she did, and she just cried and cried and cried. It was really cool. It's amazing how quickly Heavenly Father answers our prayers sometimes.

Thank you guys for making this week so very special for me! My birthday was awesome and I love you guys!

It's a Boy!

After I emailed you guys last week, we played soccer again and then had a lesson later that evening. At 10:20 PM I received a phone call from Pres. Henderson asking me if I would be willing to train a new missionary. Usually he doesn't call that late to let you know that your training, but evidently he called everybody late this time, which is kind of funny. Of course I said, "Yes" and then I left that next morning to go to Huancayo. I got to the mission home and hung out/was joking around with the assistants and we ate really well. We had Pizza Hut, KFC, Popeye’s; it was amazing compared to what we have been eating. Tuesday night we sort of just sat around and waited for the next morning. Wednesday morning we met our "kids" (all the new missionaries that just got in). They are all awesome. I met another missionary from St. George. His name is Elder Cunningham and lives over by Pine View. I thought that was kind of funny. Anyway, we found out who we were going to be training. I'm going to be training Elder Tapia. He is from Argentina. He is 20 years old and the only member in his family. We got some training, watched some of "the district" and did some other things like that. After training we went out and basically contacted all day. It kind of sucked actually but it was good. Thursday morning we got up, ate some breakfast, and then hopped in a van with some other missionaries that were going back to Huánuco. We dropped his stuff off at our place and then basically went around and introduced him to everybody. The new zone leader, that took Elder Torres's place, is Elder Hardison. He is from Arizona and lives over near the Hunter's. We received a new district leader, Elder White, he's from Springville, Utah and Elder Bush, who was in my group in the CCM, is now in my zone. He's companions with Elder Pizarro. It was great to see Elder Bush; I haven't seen him for a while. Elder Tapia is doing really well and I really like him. He is my first kid and it's so cool!

New companion--Elder Tapia
My new, new pensionista--Hermana Matias
New Digs

Friday we had a meeting with an investigator, Ruth, and we had a less active member, Robbie, go with us. Saturday was the baptism of Harry, an investigator of Elder John and Elder Hardison. It went well. We had a ward activity that night and got three referrals. It's awesome! More work for me and I can't wait! That gives us nine investigators and a number of less active people that are progressing really well. It's so awesome how much we're working right now! Lincoln, John (Kidder's brother), Junior...are all doing great. This next week we should have Christian's baptism finally. It would be really awesome if he gets baptized on my birthday! We didn't have a chance to meet with him this week because his dad has had a number of problems with alcohol. Christian came to the ward activity so that was cool.

On Sunday we had a lesson with Christian after church and it went well. Afterwards we found 4 more new investigators. It's nuts! I freaking love it! It's seriously the best. Fasting works! I have so much work to do right now; it's going to be awesome and way easy to stay busy. Things with Elder Tapia are going well. I am so happy to be training. We had a companionship inventory and he started to get emotional. He is the only member and he is so nervous to be out here. He was baptized a year and 3 months ago. I shared a scripture and he said that he felt like his whole body and mind had been cleansed! Haha, so that was pretty cool. He is a great kid! Tomorrow is going to be the first Pday in the field for my companion and so I think we are going to go to Ambo and play soccer. Well, until next week. I love you!

I Killed My Companion!

This week we had a family night with the family Segundia. They're a family that was rescued by Elder Torres an Elder John (zone leaders). We had a message and ate some stuff. We went and visited Kidder, he's doing good. We had another family night with a couple that is from Lima. They are both returned missionaries. She has family that lives here and they have three kids, a four-year-old and two twins that have a year and a half. They live in this really small room and are really struggling financially. So we had a short message and a quick dinner/refreshments of eggs and bread. It wasn't much but it was more than they had. (We need to remember how much we have and to be grateful for it and to try and look to help other people!) We are trying to help them find another room to live in and they are looking for a kitchen set and all these little things they don't have.

We had our Pday this week on Thursday instead of Monday because my companion Elder Caro and Elder Torres are going home, so we went around and took photos of all the places that they wanted and then we went and ate lunch as a zone at this Chinese place, Khon Wa. It was pretty good. Later, Elder Caro packed up to go home to Bolivia. It's kind of crazy to see him doing that! I couldn't imagine leaving right now. Besides that, we didn't really do much. We played a little soccer in the church and said goodbye to the people he wanted to say goodbye to. It was a pretty good day. Early Saturday morning, Elder Caro and Elder Torres left for Huancayo then home. So, I killed my companion! Just like I was “born” in Pampas and my trainer was my “dad”, I was Elder Caro’s last companion, so I “killed” him. It’s interesting that many missionaries use these term throughout the mission. I will be with Elder John until I get new my new companion. I am temporarily the zone leader with Elder John so we have the zone leader stuff to do. Like we were out proselyting and got a call from the APs that we had to send 2 missionaries to Lima on Sunday, so we had to drop everything and go do that. It's kind of crazy how you could be out doing whatever and then have to drop everything to take care of a problem in the zone. It's kind of irritating but was cool to see the center of Huánuco and do stuff like that. For service we painted this guy’s house.

We had a less active kid, named Lincoln, accompany us to some meetings, so that was cool. One thing I fasted for on Sunday was to find some new investigators and guess what? We found one! She's awesome! Her name is Ruth and I think she is really going to progress!

We also had a lesson with Christian. He is staying here to work and so we are officially teaching him again. We have a baptismal date for him this Saturday the 14th.  Things are great here and I hope things are great there. Love you!

Fast!

First of all, Happy Birthday to mom and dad! I love you so much and hope it’s great for you!

For our multi zone Pday, we went to this field and played soccer and volleyball. Later that day, after we showered and got all cleaned up, we had a family night with the family Matias. We had a little message and ate hotdogs. They were way, way, way good!

Guess what? We are actually moving again. Elder Caro and I found a room that we really like, we're going to pension there and do our laundry, it's going to be awesome. It's not terribly big but it's really nice. We’ll live above this little garage thing.

We did some service with Hermana Julia (the bishop's mom) by removing some earth so they could put in a wall or something like that (It seems like everyone is digging a hole somewhere here in Peru). We taught some lessons with some less actives and things are going well there. We are teaching three kids right now: Alexis, Yoel, and Anthony.

We had an activity at the church. We played volleyball and soccer and it was really fun. A lot of less actives and non-members came, so that was great.

It's the first of the month again and I had the opportunity to fast (I can't believe how fast January went by). I hope you guys really take the opportunity to fast. Back home, I really didn't do it and I've had so many answers to my prayers when I fasted. It's a crazy, crazy, crazy how many blessings this little sacrifice can bring! So I hope you guys will try and do that a little more and read your scriptures!

We had a family night with Hermano Edwin's family. All of his family members are members but his father-in-law is inactive. So we shared The Family: A Proclamation to the World and watched a video with them and everything went really, really well. We had rice and eggs for the refreshments. I felt the spirit and it was really cool to see him want to change and stuff.

Kidder is a less active boy that we have been teaching and he got rescued this week, we rescued him! Rescuing is like a baptism where a less active person is activated. We teach them all the lessons, they have to have an interview with the bishop,...and they're active again. So Kidder is active again! Yay!

Wild Week in Huanuco!

The really crazy story this week is about the churches getting robbed lately! So, we were having a meeting with Hermano Edwin, our mission leader, and Elder John and Elder Torres were in the chapel doing a baptismal interview for our district leader, who also has a baptism on Saturday. Well, Elder John noticed there was something weird or different in the ceiling, so he and Elder Torres went up there with a little flashlight. They were looking around and didn't see anything and then they looked over by the steeple. There was this guy up in the steeple just watching! So they acted like they didn't see him and then they came down and called the police. I guess the guy came in during an activity on Wednesday and he spent the night up there. I don't know how he gets in the ceiling, but he does. The police came and they went up there to get him and then the guy broke through the roof and fell down. Elder Torres grabbed the guy and then the police grabbed him. The police were slapping him around and asking him who he was with and everything. He kept claiming that he was alone. He was this really skinny guy all tatted up. He had a backpack up there with toilet paper and all kinds of stuff, but we caught him! Now the roof is all broken and some other things are broken in the church but we'll fix that. It was fricking nuts! I mean nuts! …Wait! There’s more… They let the guy out of jail!! So now, all the gringo missionaries are done for! Just know that I love you guys—haha.

On Monday, after I wrote you guys, we had a zone Pday. We played water balloon soccer at an indoor facility, so that was fun. On Tuesday we did divisions with my district leader, Elder Chapeton. It went really well. We have these new investigators, Tonya and Marcos and their daughter, Christine. They have been going to the MMM church but they're awesome and things are going good. Thursday we had service with the bishop's mom—we moved a bunch of earth from her house. It sucked, it was really hard. Oh, Christian is staying here now. Haha. So we are going to basically start all over with him, but that will be good. I am sure he will be baptized.

Wednesday and Thursday we had lessons with Gabriela and Mariana and also talked to them about their baptismal interviews. On Friday we took Gabriela and Mariana to their baptismal interviews, when we got there they were crying and fighting. It was pretty crazy. So I said a prayer that they would apologize and have the interviews and that's exactly what happened. It really amazes me on how hard Satan works when you're trying to do good things. Seriously, every time we've had a baptism, something bad happens beforehand, like today we had trouble getting baptismal clothes and it was way frantic until the last minute. After arriving to the church, I was a little worried about Mariana in her interview because she was having a little trouble remembering some of the answers, so I said another prayer and she passed with flying colors. They both did really well. That was another answer to my prayers. It was really cool. I am very grateful for that. On Saturday the baptismal service wasn't perfect but it was nice. Their parents were there to support them and it was all good. One thing about the kids here in Peru is that they have this fear of water, I really don't know why it is (I think they are scared because they watch freaky church movies where priests drown little babies). It's kind of sad. Mariana and Gabriela both left the font crying when they were done because of the water. After that, they had to bear their testimonies and I really didn't think they were going to, so I said another prayer, without doubting, and I asked that they would be able to do so and, once again, I received an answer to my prayer. Seriously guys, I hope you guys do that—ask in faith with no doubt, just like Joseph Smith. In my patriarchal blessing it says that if I exercise faith it'll reach nigh unto heaven. That's really what I'm focusing on doing right now. Really asking for things and searching, believing with all my heart, not doubting. When doubt enters, I just shut it out. Anyways, things went well, I baptized Gabriela and Elder Caro baptized Mariana.  It was cool to see them get confirmed in church. They are so happy. Love you guys!

Christian?

Monday after I wrote you guys, I had some nice stomach for dinner which was pretty nasty; but, that's what we do here. This week we taught some great lessons, menos activos, and some other investigators. We actually found two new investigators, they are two sisters and their names are Gabriela and Mariana. Gabriela has 12 years and Mariana has 10 years and they both accepted baptism dates, which is awesome! They're going to be baptized January 24th. We gave them permission slips to get signed by their parents for the girls to be baptized and they signed them and we picked them up. We are also going to start teaching their brother who wants to receive the lessons, so that's cool.

My new pensionista, Hermana Violeta

Christian, the other investigator that we have, is doing great. We found out early in the week that he was leaving to Lima to live. So we called our zone leaders to see if we could baptize him this Saturday because he really wants us to baptize him. They asked if he's had all of the lessons, and we're missing a couple of the lessons but we are going to finish all those up. He has the assistance at church that he needs and he's going to be baptized this Saturday, if we can get all of his lessons and his interview done. So that's really, really exciting! He's really such a good kid. Well, a day or two later, we went to visit Christian with our ward mission leader and he didn't show up. So that sucked! Then we went the next day to meet with him again and he didn't show up. Oh man, I just had to take a deep breath and hope for better tomorrow's. Christian's baptism on the 24th is not going to happen obviously. I feel sad for him, he's a really, really nice kid and I don't even know where he was when he didn't show up those two times. I'm sure it's hard for him right now but I hope for the best for him in Lima. So.....yesterday we saw Christian! He came to church and it looks like he might not be moving to Lima. We’ll see what happens.

Service was good this week. We did the same service that we did last week; we went and dug out this guy’s house. It was good. I worked hard and didn't get fried from the sun.

The hill behind our house

We had our correlation meeting that we have every Friday night with our ward mission leader, Hermano Edwin, he is awesome! We started a fast and it was really, really good. I fasted for revelation for our area and that some less active people would come to church and for you guys and a couple other little things. Well, check this out! We had this family that never comes to church come today! It was such a big answer to our prayers. It was way, way awesome you have no idea! Their names are Eric and Anthony and they have a sister who is active but they never, ever come. We got like 5 of their family members to show up. So that was like a huge answer to our prayers.

My bed is the bottom left

Yesterday we moved rooms, so we are in our new room now. It's nice to finally get all unpacked. So I unpacked everything and I'm hoping not to move anytime soon. Everything is going well—this week flew by, I can't it's Pday again tomorrow. We are going to wake up, go play soccer and go to this one area to play water games, I think. It's a zone Pday, and I’m not sure what we're going to do. Later in the evening, we have a family home evening with some less actives and we are going to make American brownies that I bought in “metros”.  I love you guys and I'll talk to you later.
